Denbigh Castle (21 miles)
Denbigh Castle is located on a hill overlooking and built as an intergral part of the town of Denbigh. Designed by Master James of St Georges for Edward 1, it was started in 1282 but in 1294 the unfinished castle was attacked and taken and again retaken by the English the following year when work recommenced. At this point the Great Hall, the kitchen tower, the pantry and the postern gate were completed and the town walls were enlarged, leading to the eastern section being defended by the Countess Tower and Goblin Tower.
Harlech Castle (21 miles)
Harlech Castle was built by Edward I to enforce his rule over the Welsh and even though it is the largest of Edward's castles, it was built in 7 years between 1283 and 1290. Harlech is a World Heritage site and rated by UNESCO as one of the finest examples of late 13th century and early 14th century military architecture in Europe.

Criccieth Castle was built by Llywelyn the Great in the 1230's, remodelled by Llywelyn the Last in 1270 but taken by English forces in 1283 and heavily modified by Master James of St George at Edward 1's request. With the English aquisition of the castle, the princial residence in the South West tower was moved to the Gatehouse and timber buildings including the Great Hall were built in the Inner Ward.
